Maria Montessori  (1870-1952)

One of the basic objectives in the Montessori Philosophy of Education is to cultivate the child's own natural desire to learn. The world of the child is full of sights and sounds, which at first appear chaotic. From the chaos the child must gradually create order, learning to distinguish the impressions that assail the senses and slowly but surely gain mastery of self and the environment. Dr. Maria Montessori developed what she called "prepared environment" which already possesses certain order and allows children to learn at their own capacities and in a noncompetitive atmosphere.

St. Peter Montessori began in 1972 with ten students in a modified two day program. The five day program was initiated in 1978. It is a licensed preschool and kindergarten 2 1/2 to 6 years of age accredited by the Michigan Montessori Society. We have a prepared learning environment that includes Spanish, gym, religion, music and cultural art activities with a trained Detroit Institute of Arts volunteer. In addition to an outdoor environment, we are the only school in the area that has the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program.

Our objectives are:

  • To develop in each child a positive attitude towards school and learning
  • To help each child develop self-confidence as an independent learner
  • To assist each child in building a habit of concentration
  • To help develop and foster in the child an abiding curiosity and creativity
  • To develop habits of initiative and persistence
  • To foster inner security and a sense of order in the child
  • To help develop sensory-motor skills
  • To enhance the child's ability to discriminate and judge
  • To help the child develop socially
